Unfortunately in order to make this show popular these women also needed to be "saved" and "controlled" by a man. Charlie is seen as a highly desirable and a very sexual "voice" that "saved" these girls from boredom. They also seem to need the help of at least one male in every episode in order to solve the problem at hand. These women are also made to seem very pretty and desirable. Their hair is always down and flowing, smiles are perfect, and their makeup and clothes are impeccable. We also discovered that Farrah Fawcet had it written in her contract that she was not supposed to wear a bra for the whole season.
Overall I think that Charlie's Angels was an attempted step toward women becoming more independent, but in trying to make the show popular the writers fell back into making women subordinate once more.
To be honest- it seems like the case is that in order for the show to be popular and relatable is for the women to be controlled. Do you think it would be relatable if the women were in control all the time? No. And they would lose men viewers. But you can't have it both ways. You can't seem cutesy and innocent and tough and in control at the same time. The show would be one huge contradiction.
ReplyDeleteWow. My comment is actually in response to Infaber, today. That kind of mentality is what keeps women from moving forward in equality. That's like saying, unless you make black people poor, criminal, drug addicts, people won't watch a show with black people in it. You can have women who are cute and innocent, that are capable of controlling their own lives. And if you won't watch a woman's show then you are only limiting yourself and remaining ignorant just like everyone else is. It is one thing to not have interest in it. It is another to say that women aren't capable of being entertaining unless they follow your rules. Ridiculous.
