They're always watching....

Have you ever noticed that the advertisements on the side bar of your computer suspiciously always have to do with something you're interested in? Recently I saw an ad on my side bar about running shoes... I bought my running shoes in a store...not online. So how do people know what I'm into and what should be put up? Anything and everything you do can be tracked or traced on the internet. For example, I signed up for a race online so the common sense ad to show would be one involving running gear. Advertisers look at the sites you visit and the things you buy online in order to create a side bar just for you! So you see advertisers really are out to get you...

How can you protect yourself from the insidiousness of advertising companies? Erase cookies on your web browser and be sure to block or hide any ads or pop-ups on your computer that are distracting. Oddly enough I think that what advertisers have done is very smart! What better way to get you to buy things than an advertisement of item(s) you might buy on the web pages you are browsing. So a word of caution...be careful about what you look at and know that they're always watching...
That was how many ads Americans see today!?

  1. I learned about this in another class I am taking. It is creepy how websites can tell your interests and hobbies just by something you may unintenionally click one time or another. It's creepy. Websites use this to monitor what you are buying, when and why. It's a way of making money. If they can send you something for new i pod case, when you just buy an ipod, and you buy it then they are making money. These companies only care about the money and how much they can sell. But how far will they go? Will they start tracking our phone calls next?

  2. When you are on Facebook and you like Mt.Dew's page, on your sidebar you will start to see ads for more Pepsi products. You can never escape ads, they are everywhere you look. If you want to watch a video that has gone viral, most likely you will have to watch a 30 second ad before the actual video. Even if you visit a website, an ad will popup on the website not allow you to access the website till you close the ad. I think the companies are getting out of hand with advertisement. I would like to watch a 20 second clip on Youtube without watching a 30 second ad for dawn dish soap. Elaborating on Infaber idea, we might be receiving ads via text message. Its scary to think about how the companies are looking to see what we are looking at and buying so they can advertise similar items to us.

  3. To further this topic ads are the corner stone to selling any product. If you did not see ads through regular media then most people would not know whats out there for them to spend money on. I get annoyed by ads as mush as the next guy. But, think about if you see a add that really interest you. You might think about it next time your are out at the mall shopping for yourself or a gift for another. Ads are essential to selling products to consumers. Ads are just in some of the wrong places that there is no need for them. Such as in schools with little children.
